Family escapes death by whiskers after steel ring falls of trailer and crushed their car...

The breath-taking incident happened at Magboro when a heavy metal ring fall off a trailer and crushed the car conveying eight members of an extended family. The head of the family identified simply as Baba Bilikisu, his wife, four children and the man’s parents were returning to Lagos after celebrating the Sallah, Eid-el- Kabir outside the state.

The accident occurred at Magboro bus stop in front of Western Metal Company Limited, close to the long bridge. A witness, who gave account of the accident, told our correspondent yesterday that but for the children in the Golf 2 car who requested to urinate, all the occupants of the vehicle would have died when the steel ring fell off the trailer...

He said: “We were at the bus stop when the steel ring fell off the trailer. It was by mercy of God that the occupants of the car were saved. “The people were coming from Ibadan for the Sallah break when the children were pressed. Their daddy stopped and brought them out to urinate.

It was when they had gone out of the car that one of the steel rings in the trailer fell off and descended on the car.” Another witness, a motorcyclist, who gave his name as Ojo, said Baba Bilikisu’s wife was the only one left in the car sleeping. Ojo said the woman was saved by the ‘sharpness’ of her husband who suspected the steel ring would roll off the trailer and quickly rushed to car to bring her out. He said: “They were about 10 in the vehicle.
The ring damaged the driver section of the car. No life was lost as none of the family members was in the car.”

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ibafo, who gave his name as Mr Lawal, said the matter was not reported to the police. Also, the Unit Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mowe Unit Command in charge of the corridor, Assistant Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, said the matter was not reported at his unit.

But sources said officials of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at Wawa, Ogun State, impounded the trailer, the driver and towed the Golf car to their station. When our correspondent visited the place yesterday, the station officer refused to speak on the matter. But the vehicles were parked at the station.
